| 3 Things I've Learned |
[05 Nov 2009|02:54pm] |
I've been doing a lot of wrenching and riding this last week and have discovered a few things.
1. Fixed off-road is friggin' awesome. I went riding with Topanga Creek Bicycles on Sunday morning on an easy-paced 20-mile ramble along the nearby fire roads of Topanga Canyon and Dirt Mulholland. There was nothing really technical, but a fair amount of climbing. I had mentioned putting together a fixed cross bike before using a dingle cog. Well, I finally got that bike together and this was its maiden dirt voyage. The bike climbs like a champ. Like a serious mountain goat. So awesome. This was countered, however, by my perhaps over-cautious downhill descents. I was running slicks so I didn't want to wipe out, and yet while I came close a few times I was able to recover thanks to the feedback from the fixed wheel.
Also, it was an absolutely gorgeous day. I needed that ride if only to get out of the city for a little while. Here's a crappy iPhone pic. Forgot to bring a real camera.

2. You can remove a front derailleur without breaking the chain. How did I not discover this until now? The mechanism is so obvious. As a result of this newly acquired knowledge, I spent last night moving derailleurs around between bikes testing different crank/derailleur combinations. It's something I'd been meaning to do but put off because I thought it was going to be too much trouble.
3. Hooray for downtube shifters! I had always been more of a bar-end shifter kind of guy, but liked the look of downtube shifters for their simplicity and elegance. Well, the indexing on my bar-end shifters for my main ride had been feeling funny as of late. I think it's because I had been running my cable housing underneath my entire handlebar length instead of having the cables come out the front as usual. The extra housing length and bends were probably causing too much friction. At any rate, I had a pair of Suntour downtube friction shifters sitting in my parts box so rather than fiddle with the bar-ends I put those on. So pretty. So simple. So pleasant. I'm still a fan of my bar-ends. I'm saving them for one of my next bicycle projects - putting dirt drop handlebars on my mountain bike.

| To all drivers in the Boston area |
[04 Nov 2009|05:33pm] |
I have noticed this trend at busy intersections, particularly post-daylight-savings (because apparently, nobody here knows how to drive in the dark). I thought that if I could influence just a single driver to change his/her driving habits, it would save many other drivers a few minutes of frustration.
When a light turns yellow, and there is no space for you on the other side of the traffic light, please do not race forth into the middle of the intersection. The cars in front of you will not magically disappear when the light turns red.
Instead, you'll be the a$$hole blocking the intersection. And the drivers who now have a green light will hate your guts because they can't be going on their merry way, and they've already had to wait several rounds of lights because of other a$$holes just like you.
So please, if a light turns yellow and there's no space for you ahead, be patient and wait for the next green light. You'll end up in the same space 15 feet in front of you anyway, and at least you won't be the a$$hole blocking the intersection.
Thank you.

| MEC moving in on bike sales |
[04 Nov 2009|11:20am] |
Apparently Canadian LBS's are frustrated with Mountain Equipment Co-op for deciding to sell bikes. A few years back MEC stopped carrying Park Tools brand stuff, and the rumour I heard was that the bike shop lobby had convinced wholesalers to refuse to sell Park to MEC because they felt it was undercutting them. The comments on that story are not sympathetic to the smaller shops.
What do the Canadian pirates think about all this?

| room in Somerville 3BR - available immediately |
[03 Nov 2009|03:03pm] |
I've recently moved out of my convenient, Davis-adjacent 3-bedroom, and my awesome former roommates need to replace me ASAP.
The apartment's off Broadway, right by Tufts and a 5-10 minute walk from Davis. My friends like a laid-back, friendly, homelike atmosphere, so they're looking for someone who'd be interested in the same. The place is a good deal: $700 rent, including heat/water (electricity & cable/internet are separate, but have always been manageable). It's convenient, affordable, and the company's excellent - I really could not have asked for more pleasant people to live with. If my new place weren't so perfect for my commute/specific social circle, I never would have left.
Check out the craigslist ad for more info/photos, and please email us (burnhamstreet at gmail) if interested. Thanks! :)

| Any NOLA Pirates? |
[03 Nov 2009|12:26pm] |
Alright folks, I need some advice from any of you who do or have lived in New Orleans.
I've got a tricky commute from my work to my school, and from my school to my home. No well-paved, wide, safe-ish streets to take me all the way that I've found so far. So I thought I'd see if any of you thugs have some pointers.
I need to leave the CBD (Camp and Poydras) in the afternoon and get to UNO (Elysian Fields and Leon Simon). Then I need to leave UNO at 7pm and find my way to the LGD (Magazine and Constance).
Any ideas?

I need help finding an apartment. Trying to locate a decent apartment this time of year has not been easy, which is why I'm willing to get help from a realtor or somebody who knows what's out there. The cheaper their service, the better. I'm looking for loft-style studio/1 bedroom apartment in the Cambridge/Somerville or metro north area.
On a more pathetic note, I just broke up with my live-in fiance of 5 years, and I don't really know what to do right now to get through it. I do not know anyone else in this city aside from a few coworkers and I feel ridiculously alone. It doesn't help that the holidays are coming up, or that I have to live with my ex until I find a decent place to live. Has anyone been in a similar situation, and if so, what did you do to get through it? I don't even know how to meet people, since all I do all day is go to work and go home.
